K-1 Visa Alternatives

Your Options

If you are ready to take your relationship further and bring her to the United States, you have a few options. Before you assume a K-1 Visa is the only way, consider the alternatives.

Student Visa

Olga, Age 28, kazan RussiaA student visa permits attendance at a college in the US. This also gives a potential fiancé a chance to spend time with you, adjust to life in the US and decide if she is able to commit to staying permanently. It would require that she have good English speaking skills and an academic background to support admission to college.

Tourist Visa

Picture of a Russian WomanA tourist visa allows a potential fiance to travel to the US briefly and see what she thinks of life here. This kind of visa has some restrictions and usually requires a travel agents services to validate all arrangements. (Meaning she cant just say, I’m going to stay with a friend-her Visa will require validation once she arrives) Contrary to what you may be told, a tourist Visa is not impossible to get. The ability to fund such a trip can be rather expensive and the US Embassy will want some assurances she is planning (and can prove) she will return home when the Visa expires. Still, if you are not comfortable with proposing marriage without spending some serious time with her, this could be your best solution. You can also travel to visit her in Russia which is explained elsewhere on the site.

Work Permit/Work Visa

Anastasia, Age 36, StavropolA work permit can be obtained allowing your Fiancé to work in the US for approximately 4-5 months. These are common for students seeking to earn money over the summer and then return to school in the fall. There are some limitations on how soon a person can return to the US after they return home and their work permit expires. These visas are less restrictive on certain issues but there is a time limit and serious consequences for those who break the rules. For example, if an individuals comes to the US on a certain type of Visa and doesn’t leave the US when their Visa expires, they can be blacklisted by the Homeland Security Office and never be eligible for entry to the US again.
