Preparation service for Fiancé’s in Russian speaking countries who are preparing to attend their K1 visa interview.

This service is provided in Russian and is designed to help your Fiancé know exactly what to expect before she arrives at the Embassy.

  • The Service includes the following program:
  • Review of important documents and how to organize them
  • What to expect at the medical exam
  • What to expect upon arrival at the Embassy
  • Typical questions asked be Embassy officials
  • What happens after the interview?
  • Review any unanswered questions your Fiancé may have.
  • Follow Up email with the American Fiancé with a review of any open issues that might need to be addressed before the interview.

Why should I request this service?

While going to the American Embassy may sound simple, it is actually a very stressful step in the immigration process. The Embassy and Consulates are only located in a few key cities, causing many to travel and stay there for several days during the process. This means planning ahead, packing, scheduling exams, interviews and a place to stay. Any detail that is overlooked could cause problems, cost money or build reasons for self doubt that this is the right choice.

Isn’t the interview just a formality?

The interview is the first time the State Department has met the person you’ve been telling the USCIS about for the last 6 to 9 months. It’s actually a test of sorts to ensure everything is legitimate. Your Fiance will have to provide police reports, pass a medical exam and be able to comfortably tell the “story” of how she met her Fiance in the United States. If any part of this process is suspicious the embassy officials will question in more detail and possibly deny the petition.

How much does it Cost?

The cost of the service is $60 and covers the following:

  • All communication costs to call your Fiancé
  • Consult in Russian by a native Russian Speaker
  • Follow Up Email to the American Fiancé on outstanding issues.

Can I be on the line during the phone call?

The interview is conducted in Russian for the benefit of the Fiancé attending the Embassy interview. A third party could slow down the process or confuse matters during the consult. To keep the time and costs down we do not permit a third person on the call, but we document everything discussed and send a report to the American Fiancé on what was reviewed and any outstanding issues that may exist.

Please complete the form below to request the Embassy Preparation Service.
We will send you an invoice for payment once we receive your information.

Travel to Russia

What is involved in planning a trip to Russia? Travel to Russia can be an overwhelming idea at first but thousands of people travel there everyday. Your trip can be arranged with some effort and planning on your part. If you want to know more about rules and issues associated with traveling to Russia, go here. The guides below will help you anticipate what you will need in advance so you are well informed before your trip. The basic flow of events are:

  • Obtain Passport
  • Make Hotel Reservation
  • Apply for Russian Visa
  • Order Airline Tickets
  • Arrange Ground Transport
  • Take Trip
  • Border Entry and Customs
  • Return to US

Obtain Passport

The first part of International travel is to obtain or update your US passport. The process can take up to 45 days to complete unless you pay for express service. This is a very essential part of trip preparation as you will need your passport BEFORE you can apply for a Russian Visa. The first document needed to apply for a passport is your birth certificate. If you can’t find yours or it is not available to you, don’t worry You can order one from the state of your birth. Once you have your birth certificate, you can apply for your passport. Click here to find the government office closest to you where a passport can be requested. NOTICE: As of January 23, 2007, all persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air will be required to present a valid passport to re-enter the country. A valid driver’s license will no longer suffice for re-entry documentation.

Make Hotel Reservation

The major cities in Russia all have nice hotels. The standards of room size and features can be a bit different than what you would see in an American Hotel. Usually the rooms are smaller and less corporate looking but the comfort level is roughly the same. For an idea of Hotel availability in the town you plan to visit, click here.

Tourist Visa:

There are two types of Russians Visas available for you to visit your girlfriend, Vacation and Home Stay. For assistance in applying for a Visa, we recommend OSTWest as they manage bookings for complete travel arrangements including online Visa Applications. A Tourist visa Requires a hotel to confirm your presence in their establishment. The Tourist Visa is based on the premise that you will be staying at a hotel or on an organized tour. The Hotel you will be staying with will send you a confirmation of your stay which you attach with your Visa application (meaning you book the hotel then apply for the visa).

A Home Stay Visa This Visa requires your girlfriend to submit an invitation on your behalf, then send the approved application to you so you can apply for a Visa. The process is more lengthy than a vacation visa but it has extended benefits. Longer time periods are allowed, you can stay where you like as long as you check in at their Immigration offices once in a town, and you have more time to schedule the visit. If your fiancé has applied for you to stay with her, then you will attach this document (obtained by her from her local OVIR office) with your Visa application.

When completing the Visa application You will be asked very specific questions such as, when will you arrive, where will you stay and for how long? This completed paperwork will be sent, by you, the Russian Consulate. You will include your passport in the package so they can affix the Visa on one of the available pages in your passport. Once you have the Visa paperwork figured out and your tickets purchased, you are ready to plan your trip to visit your fiance. There are many things to discuss and coordinate before you pack your suitcase. In all of this process, you will be able to decide places to see and visit.

Order Airline Tickets

The price of tickets to Russia can change depending on when you book your tickets and when you will take your trip. The farther ahead you book your flight the better. From May until August tickets are the most expensive, as this is the warm season. If you can make you trip outside the summer, your airfare will be reduced greatly.

Ground Transportation

This is usually needed upon departure from an Airport. If someone meets you at the airport, you will be able to negotiate a much better deal on a taxi. Your fiance or friend will usually be experienced in negotiating with taxi drivers, it’s best not to say much or reveal you are an American. Cab drivers are savvy enough to take advantage of international travelers who don’t know local rates.

Travel by Train:

If your trip includes additional travel by train, you are in for a real treat. Russian Trains are very reliable and comfortable. If you can obtain a private car, you will find the accommodations very nice and relaxing. Most trains have dining cars and other amenities making them the best way to move about the country.

Airport Transfers

A taxi ride might be required if you will be switching airports to make additional connections to another city. This is very common in Moscow and the airports are very spread out. Be prepared for a lengthy, and somewhat costly ride in this case. A typical transfer,if prearranged, can be as much as $75 since it may be an hour long drive through traffic. Russian cab drivers usually wait for your plane and dedicate a lot of time to your trip, so the service is more personal than an American cab who waits outside on the street.

Border Entry and Customs

Border: After you land you will have to enter the Russian Border. Entrance is fairly simple, they will examine your Passport, Visa and a form you complete upon arrival which describes your travel plans. You will insert a portion of this form in your passport and will be asked for it when you leave the country. The border authority will expect it to be stamped either by the hotel you stayed at or the local OVIR office if you stayed with friends or your fiancée. Customs: Once you pass through the Border, you will go through the Customs process. Typically this only takes a few minutes if you are declaring less than 10,000 in cash. For those carrying larger sums; more papers and questions will be asked. Be very cautious of your safety upon leaving the “over 10K” section of customs. It is very unsafe to travel alone in this condition as it is obvious you are in possession of large amount of cash or valuables. It is best to be met by someone to ensure you are accounted for. More about Customs >>

Returning Home

After obtaining your return flight’s boarding pass, you will go through the border exit process. This is very similar to your arrival experience. They will ask for the form you were provided on arrival and will inspect the stamp from the hotel or OVIR office. If you loose this form, your exit from Russia could be delayed by days or weeks! There are also fines involved in some cases, so be sure to keep up with the arrival form.Security is thorough, your bags will be inspected and you will most likely go through more than one check point before arriving at your gate. Once you are through the checkpoints, there are shops, restaurants and lounges to help you relax before your long flight home. Remember to keep all your papers, receipts and memorabilia! Retain all your restaurant receipts, subway tickets, theater and tourism stubs for future use. These are great ways to prove your relationship and they look great on the “proof of relationship” portion of the K-1 package. Advice: Take a the USCIS Background Information form with you on your trip. Your fiancé will need to sign this and help you fill it out. The K-1 requires both you and your fiancé to complete a background form. By completing and signing the form with you, your ability to file for the K1 application can be accelerated. Otherwise you will have to mail her the form, wait for her to sign and send it to you, and only then can you submit the package. This could amount to several weeks of waiting just to file!

Resources for Trip Planning:

There are several sites to help you get the most from your trip. We recommend OST-West based on their first hand experience with people who set up their own travel arrangements to Russia.

What is involved in the Medical Exam for a Fiancée Visa?

The following information is provided from the US Embassy website in Moscow,
Russia:

All applicants for immigrant visas must undergo a medical examination

Medical examinations for U.S. immigrant visas may be performed at the following
embassy-designated clinics:

• the International Organization for Migration, telephone (7-095) 797-8723,

• the Filatov Clinic, telephone (7-095) 423-7780, (8-902) 671-2964 or

• AO Meditsina, telephone (7-095) 250-9186 or 250-8899.

• Children’s Hospital no. 1, Vladivostok. Tel. (4232) 40-13-35 or (4232)
45-24-26.

Please contact the clinics directly for fees and appointment times.

The vaccination requirement applies to all immigrant visa applicants, except K
and V visa applicants, and will be incorporated into the medical examination
process.

Applicant should bring to the panel physician all medical records,
which list vaccinations received. Episodes of vaccine-preventable illnesses
suffered by the applicant, or medical conditions, which would affect the
administration of vaccines. Without appropriate documentary evidence to
substantiate an applicant’s claims of vaccinations, illnesses or allergies, the
panel physician will not consider the vaccination requirements to be fulfilled.

If, at the time of the medical examination, the panel physician finds that the
applicant is not in compliance with the vaccination requirements, the applicant
may either have the necessary vaccinations administered by the panel physician,
or by a private physician of his or her choice. If the applicant chooses to have
a non-panel physician administer the vaccinations, he or she will have to
provide the panel physician with documentary evidence that the vaccinations were
administered.

Some vaccinations require a series of doses. If the applicant has begun the
series, and is not due for the next inoculation at the time of the medical
examination, he or she will be considered to have met the requirement for that
vaccination. Vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis are required
for all applicants ages 2 months to 6 years, vaccinations for tetanus-diphtheria
required for all applicants 7 years and older, polio vaccinations are required
of those 2 months to 17 years old, vaccinations for measles, mumps, and rubella
are required of applicants from 12 months to 64 years old, hepatitis B
vaccinations are required for those up to 17 years old, and influenza
vaccinations are required for applicants 65 years and older.

Since it can take up to 2 days to receive the results of the medical exam, some
applicants choose to remain in Moscow from the time of their medical exam until
their appointment date at the Embassy.

Medical exam results are usually valid for a year. However, they may be valid
just for six months depending on applicant’s medical conditions.

If you have any specific questions in regards to medical exam, please, call one
of the mentioned above clinics.

Where can I meet Russian Women?

Try searching locally. It is very possible, given the growing population of Russians in America to find a woman of the former Soviet Union. This may seem simple enough but Russians tend to blend in and keep a low profile in their surroundings. If their language skills are not advanced enough, they may stick to small groups of other Russians speakers, which will make it even harder to find them. The simplest method is to look at visit local churches with a Russian language service or search on www.meetup.com for Russian language groups in your area. You may also try searching online websites for women who list Russian as a language they speak. This may help you find someone locally or regionally but the best method is to travel where the women naturally are-CIS (Former Soviet Union) countries.

Are Russian Women Desperate for Western Men?

No. There are plenty of men in Russia and many of them marry. However, economic factors can influence a persons desire to look beyond their borders for a better life. Just as many American men look beyond the local female population for foreign women who might suit them better. The stereotypical phrase “Russian Bride” is very outdated and extremely unfair, if not insulting, to the thousands of American-Russian couples who meet and get married each year. There certainly are women in Russia and other countries who see marriage to a Westerner as romantic and exciting. Similarly there are large numbers of Western men who find East European women to be very attractive, intelligent, educated and family oriented. Many of these men eventually board a plane and travel to meet the woman of their dreams. Shortly thereafter an engagement and immigration process takes place.

What about Scammers?

Are there scam artists who take advantage of the distance and anonymity behind a photo and email? Certainly! But not just on the Russian side, many men also conceal facts about their identity, financial status or intentions in the relationship.

On the Russian side there are women who contact men, and within days confess their undying love and devotion then proposition the man to send her money so she can come see him. [This process completely defies logic since the woman would need a fiancé visa which the man must submit on her behalf to the US Department of Homeland Security.] Nevertheless, many men act on their emotions and send money to women they barely know. They later discover the woman has disappeared or asks for more money depending on the scam tactics. Or worse, that she wasn’t a woman at all!

The best defense against such situations is to work through a reputable dating and introduction agency. These agencies will have offices in the United States and Russia. They will also verify the identity of the girls on their website and assist their customers with introduction, translation, travel accommodations and paperwork as needed.

Searching for Russian Women Online

An online search allows you to review all suitable women who may interest Anna is 21 and from Odessa, Ukraine-Learn more at RussiansBride.comyou. You can also review their interests, hobbies, number of children they have or want and endless other statistics. In some instances, men travel to Russia on Romance Tours where they are introduced to hundreds of women in a single evening. They usually have reviewed the women’s profiles ahead of time and then use the evening as a way to see how their face to face interaction works out. Warning: A picture is only a sample of someone and should never be mistaken for evidence of attraction or a desire to date.

We recommend RussiansBride.com as our preferred dating agency due to it’s reputation and long standing business relationship with thousands of clients and families. RussiansBride.com has offices all over Eastern Europe and a business presence in the United States as well.

Isn’t it expensive to Travel to Russia?

This is a very common concern among men considering a foreign bride. But cost is not not the only issue. There are more pressing decisions to make, such as: Are you ready for a serious relationship? Can you handle waiting for her immigration paperwork (typically 4-7 months) to process?

In terms of expense, most men can save up enough for airline tickets and even the immigration process. In fact, thousands of men spend this money each day to bring the love of their life to the United States.

Is it worth the expense to find a foreign woman and bring her here?

The better question is, are you worth investing a higher cost in expenses to find the right woman for you? Are you worth that much travel, paperwork and frustration to meet the love of your life? Of course you are! This is not a simple date for fun, this is a serious search to find your soul mate, a woman you can share your life with. If you feel that is not something you can do here in the United States–then why not consider a foreign bride? She has already considered you or someone like you when she put her name and picture online.

Note: a key difference in women of Eastern Europe is that they are comfortable discussing marriage, children and serious intentions on the first date. These women are very responsible and educated and can’t afford to spend time on someone who wants to play games or doesn’t know what he wants.

What about Age Differences?

It’s important to set realiatic expectations. A man who is 60 should not be naive to think girls in their early twenties are a good match for him. This type of plan will attract women who are looking to get what they can from the man and then leave him when the time is convenient.

With the obvious aside, there are some facts to consider when looking for your ideal match. Specifically in regard to age differences between men and women.

East European women typically look for a man who is older as they prefer a mature man who is settled in life, able to provide and take care of her. Western men are ideal because many have already been married in the past, are attentive to women and are beyond their twenties, thirties or even forties. It is not uncommon to see a man in his late thirties or mid forties with a young girl. While this is encouraging to men who thought they could not date girls so young, there must be a reasonable expectation with age differences. The reverse is also true, a man in his twenties will not be as desired by East European women as they can sterotype him as immature, and possibly unstable financially.

How do Russian Women see their own age?

Russian women view their ages in a very critical light compared to Western women. A woman has her “best years”in her early to mid twenties and is usually married and having children before the age of 30. An unmarried woman over the age of 25 can even be viewed as an old maid by some as the Soviet Era encouraged marriage and children by the age of 22.

Women who are over the age of 30 also see themselves as much older than they truly are. Many of the women, over 30, seen on dating sites often are divorced with children. This may seem similar to western women but the key difference is that Russian women typically look 10 years younger than their western counterparts. It is not uncommon for a woman in her 40’s to be mistaken for 28 or less.

The K-1 Fiancee Visa Process

Explanation and Background of the K1 Visa

If you are ready to take your relationship further and bring your Fiancée to the United States, you have a few options. Before you assume a K-1 Visa is the only way, consider the alternatives. However, If you are ready to begin the immigration process then the K-1 is the best fit for your girlfriend or Fiancée. Note: The K-1 Visa is used if you are not married but intend on marriage after your Fiancée arrives. If you are already married then you must file a K-3 Visa for your wife and a K-4 visa for any children in the family. This process can be lengthy (see time issue for a US Fiancée Visa) for more details and expectations.

The K-1 Visa is an application for the woman you wish to marry.

Meaning: You have a relationship with her that can be proven via pictures, letters, emails, phone calls, wedding plans, etc. If you just met this girl, you can’t apply for a K-1 right away-and expect it to be approved.

This site will give you some resources to help you build the case for your application making it much more in line with what the Department of Homeland Security will look for. All the information provided is based on first hand experiences of men who applied for a Visa on behalf of their Russian Fiancée. In all cases, the men met the girls online, went to meet them and then submitted the application–and it was approved.

First Steps: Establish the Relationship

Once you have found a lady you are interested, you will want to meet her and see how things go. (See the page on Travel to Russia for details and tips on planning a trip). There are numerous websites available with Russian Women, however you have to be cautious as many scam artists also frequent these sites. We recommend you work with a reputable agency that has interviewed and photographed the woman you are interested in. This helps establish her as a legitimate relationship seeker.

If you haven’t met the lady of your dreams yet, then you want to consider a reputable online agency to find the right person for you. There are scammers who play on men’s good intentions to obtain money without ever meeting them. A reputable agency ensures the identity and intentions of the young lady are verified by a third party.

Document the Relationship

After finding someone you feel more serious about, you will begin to discuss meeting in person. At this point it is wise to begin documenting your relationship. It may seem silly to keep records of your phone calls and emails with your girlfriend, but later it will be proof of the relationship, how it began, grew and was maintained over a period of time.

First time meeting a Russian Woman-tipsPlan Your First Meeting

If you are planning a trip or have taken one-make sure you take lots of pictures with her. This is the essence of spending time with someone as far as DHS is concerned. The requirement that you meet the girl in her home country is no longer in place, but pictures of the two of you together is definitely essential. Additionally, copies of airline tickets, hotel receipts and pictures are essential elements of proving your relationship when you file the K-1 visa. More information on travel to Russia is available here.

Once you have the Visa and tickets in hand you are ready to plan your trip with you girlfriend. There are many things to discuss and coordinate before you pack your suitcase. In all of this process, you will be able to decide places to see and visit. Just remember to keep all your papers for future use, restaurant receipts, subway tickets, theater and tourism stubs, all of these look great on the “proof of relationship” portion of the K-1 package.

Advice on meeting a Russian woman in her home country Advice from those who have been there:

Take a copy of the Background Information form* (Immigration G-325A with you on your trip. Your Fiancée will need to sign this and help you fill it out. The K-1 requires you and your Fiancée to complete a background form. It is also a good idea to obtain four immigration photos of her while there. This will save time when filing her application as you wont have to wait for her to have the pictures taken and then mail them to you.

After your visit, you will be more certain about applying (or not) for her K-1 Visa. Now it’s time to collect your documents and begin filling out the paperwork. Most of the information requested is very straight forward, until they ask you to provide proof of your relationship. Don’t be fooled with how general this question sounds. If you send two snapshots and write a couple sentences about how you met, you will most likely get a letter form the Immigration office asking for more information. This means your application will take even longer to be processed!

*There is a detailed guide and template regarding this topic in the Fiancée Visa Kit.

Filing the K-1 Visa for a Russian WomanFiling the K-1 with the USCIS

A word about the processing time: The Fiancée Visa process moves slow! There are no quick ways to get this Visa, and it is not something to be requested lightly. Your paperwork needs to be very organized and easy to follow or the application will take even longer. If you visit the Immigration websites and check the processing times you will see that Fiancée Visas* are typically 4 to 6 months behind in backlog. You can track your application once you have a tracking number from the Immigration Office.

There are other factors to slow the process such as: The area you live in dictates where you send the K-1 application to a specified regional office. Each office has different processing times and issues. Also-the country of your Fiancée’s origin will dictate issues with when she can complete the required physical and interview in her home country. This will be done at an American Embassy where many applicants must report to be interviewed and approved to receive their visa. Once approved, your Fiancée will have 180 days to use her Visa (enter the US) and once in the US will have 90 days to marry you or return home. There are no known exceptions to this rule unless extreme situations occurred, and usually those are dealt with after the woman has returned home- unmarried. *This topic is covered in detail in the Fiancée Visa Kit.

Any documents that are originally in Russian must include a certified translationn into English by a competent translator. We recommend using a service familiar with visa processing and official documents with expertise in the Russian and English language. American Experience LLC offers an affordable solution for your translation needs and can provide digital and hard copy versions of your translated documents. Click here to read more>>.

Why does it take so long? I thought they were speeding the system up?

You have to consider that million sof applications are filed each year. Your request for your Fiancee is one of many that must be hand processed. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) relies on about 55 million paper-based files to adjudicate applications for immigration status and other benefits. Ensuring the currency and availability of these manual files, referred to as alien files, or A-Files, is a major challenge. To address this challenge, USCIS has initiated efforts, both long and near term, to automate the A-Files. The long-term effort is now being re-examined within the context of a larger USCIS organizational transformation initiative. In the near term, USCIS has begun a digitization program, which it estimates will cost about $190 million over an 8-year period to electronically scan existing paper files and store and share the scanned images.

The Fiance Visa InterviewThe Interview

Once your Fiancée’s package is approved by the Immigration office, her papers are sent to the American Embassy in her home country. This can take up to two weeks or more. When the package arrives at the Embassy, they will send her a notice that her package is there and that she needs to schedule an interview. She will need to bring several documents (some are provided by you) to the interview, including a medical physical report, immunization report, results from blood tests, letter form the local police office stating she has no outstanding crimes, and a police report from every place she has lived in the last few years. She will be required to appear in person for her interview where they will ask for all documents and ask her questions* about her relationship with you. Typical questions are:

What is his name, what does he do for a living, where does he live and how did you meet?

If your Fiancée doesn’t speak English, the questions will be far more detailed, as it seems strange that a woman would marry a man she can’t communicate with. Most of these women do get approved, but the questions are more thorough as a precaution.

*This topic is covered in detail in the Fiancée Visa Kit.

Many Americans fly to the girls interview as a sign of support and commitment, but only the Fiancée is allowed in the interview.

Advice from those who have been there:

Your Fiancée will be asked for your financial affidavits* and possibly another background information form, along with additional proof of relationship. Since the wait for the interview is so long, couples get VERY nervous about the interview not going well. To ease this process, it is best to have everything imaginable present in a notebook for her to present should it be asked for. Documents, photos, notes on your family, if you have children, your address and place of work, etc.

*This topic is covered in detail in the Fiancée Visa Kit.

Finally!

Your Fiancée has her K-1 Visa! Now she can join you in the United States!

Time issue for a U.S. Fiancée Visa

The US Fiancée Visa application process is typically 4-7 months from the time you file the original paperwork. The process ends when she completes her interview at the US embassy in her home country.

During this time several key events take place:

  • Acceptance of the application for a Fiancée Visa
  • Processing of the application for a Fiancée Visa
  • Approval of the application and forwarding to the US Embassy in her home country.
  • Notification for her to appear for an interview at the US Embassy
  • Completion of documents by her including
  • –A police report from her home town
  • –Completion of a medical exam including a blood test.

How long is a Fiancée Visa Valid?

A K-1 Visa is good for 6 months from the date issued, during which time your Fiancée can enter the US. Once she enters the clock is ticking with a 90 day countdown for her to either marry you or exit the country.

After that, your Fiancée needs to file for an adjustment of status to become a legal resident of the US. This is not a requirement, but without adjustment of status your Fiancée will not be able to obtain the necessary papers and documents to live a normal life. For example a social security card, drivers license, work permit or employment and a bank account. More information is available on this process in the Post Marriage section.
